About us

Who We Are

Family & Credit Counselling Services serving York Region is a community-based blended organization that includes Community Counselling Services of York Region. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that reflects the community we serve. 


What We Do

Credit and Debt Counselling

Family & Credit Counselling Services serving York Region is a not-for-profit, registered charitable organization that has been providing practical assistance and guidance to people with debt and money management issues in York Region and beyond for over 40 years. Our services are available for families and individuals from any age group, culture, or income level.  Our clients come from all lifestyles.

For those who need it, we offer a variety of unbiased debt-counselling services and alternatives to help people get their debts under control.

Our counsellors are very well versed in family financial management and consumer debt strategies. They work with you to develop the best solution for your needs.



Family & Credit Counselling teaches consumers how to budget, get out of debt, and use credit wisely. Our education programs cover such topics as:


  • Strategies and the importance of saving for needs, wants and emergencies
  • Strategy for establishing and reaching your financial goals
  • Money Personality Exercise
  • Ten rules of money management and budgeting
  • How to create a realistic budget
  • Credit bureaus, credit files and credit ratings
  • What to compare when shopping for a credit card, proper use of credit and warning signs of financial difficulty
  • Tips and tricks for saving money



Community Counselling Services 

We provide pre- and post-charge services to youth and adults in conjunction with York Regional Police on a referral basis only. Our counselling and therapy services, which are available to anyone in York Region and the GTA (no referral needed) fall under the umbrella of Community Counselling Services as well.

  • Face to face counselling.
  • Referrals to other agencies and services.
  • Community-based workshops and presentations through community groups and service agencies, local libraries etc.


Our office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30p.m. Appointments are available outside of regular office hours as required.

In general, you can visit this website without telling us who you are or providing any information about yourself.

Our agency collects, uses and discloses personal information of clients who participate in credit counselling and/or debt management programs with this agency in the following way:


How information is collected


By telephone, personal interview, e-mail and our website, mail, businesses, creditors, trustees, social agencies and service organizations that refer clients to us for the purpose of utilizing our services or at the request of a client.                                                                                                                               


Who might see a client’s information:            

Credit counsellors, designated office staff and administrative personnel who administer credit counselling programs for this agency in addition to those listed above.                                                                    



How long the information is kept:                         


  • Information concerning a client’s debt repayment program in his/her file is kept for 7 years from the date the file is closed;
  • Information concerning the original application and details thereof required for credit counselling with this agency is kept for 2 years from the date the information was provided by the client.


Why we collect information from our clients:


  • To open a file with this agency;
  • To communicate with creditors or their representative, in order to affirm a client’s identity as an individual doing business with the creditor;
  • To confirm a client’s account information, and to verify outstanding balances with creditors;
  • To communicate details of a client’s financial situation with other businesses, services and social agencies that we refer a client to, only at the request of a client, for the purposes of utilizing the services that such businesses or social agencies provide;
  • To continue to use or disclose the information that clients have already provided to this agency or will provide in the future for the provision of Credit Counselling services.


We do not share, rent or sell any personally identifying information provided through this website (such as your name or email address) to any outside organization for use in its marketing or solicitations.
